Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work in various key areas within small businesses. I have overseen sales, marketing, and operations departments in fast-growing companies, consistently achieving positive outcomes while leading teams of professionals in each field. I generally enjoyed my leadership positions, as they have provided me with a comprehensive understanding of small businesses. Due to my background, I frequently receive inquiries from individuals interested in discussing the Chief X Officer position at Company Y and how well-suited I am for the role. While I appreciate the impact these leadership roles can have on a company's performance, it is not my passion.

Since my college days studying accounting and finance, I have always been attracted to the numerical aspect of business. These subjects have always come naturally to me. Upon graduating, my first job involved managing the books of a $300 million division within a manufacturing company. I distinctly recall a situation where the accounting leadership team was unable to resolve a discrepancy in a crucial asset account. I offered my assistance and dedicated extra hours that day to solve the problem. By 9 pm, I successfully identified and reported the issue to my superiors. This enduring memory throughout the years demonstrates my sincere enthusiasm for this field of work, and has caused me to reflect on the reasons behind my love for bookkeeping.

Solving a Puzzle

Bookkeeping can be likened to solving a intricate puzzle. Each piece has its designated place and will only fit in a specific way. Initially, a piece may seem to belong in one spot, but upon closer inspection, it may not fit and must be tried in different areas. This is how my mind works. When managing bookkeeping for my clients, I am consistently transforming disorder into something organized and beautiful. The task is not complete until every piece has been correctly placed. Every piece contributes to the overall picture of a business, much like a puzzle. Bookkeeping has its own unique language, and a solid grasp of this language is crucial. Many small business owners are not fond of this language and are reluctant to learn a new one.

Diversity of Work

In the field of bookkeeping, each client is unique. Even when clients belong to the same industry, their business approaches and decision-making processes will vary significantly. These distinctions are reflected in their financial records. I appreciate the diversity that comes with managing bookkeeping for my clients. I might handle the accounts of a retail store in the morning and those of a construction firm in the afternoon. This variety enables me to gain insights into various business models and essential performance indicators required to gauge success in different sectors. I am invigorated by the opportunity to expand my knowledge and collaborate with a wide array of clients.

A Helping Profession

In previous posts, I have emphasized the crucial role that exceptional bookkeepers play in assisting small business owners in enhancing their operations. Through the practice of bookkeeping, individuals gain a comprehensive view of a company's performance, which should guide strategic decision-making. When a bookkeeper can transform financial data into practical strategic goals for their clients, the value that small business owners receive from their bookkeeper is unparalleled. I find this aspect of bookkeeping particularly rewarding as it allows me to utilize my business expertise and experience daily to support the success of small business owners. Witnessing owners achieve their professional and personal objectives based on the insights and guidance I offer as their bookkeeper is immensely gratifying.

Although my role has significantly changed from being the Chief X Officer at Company Y, I now discover greater satisfaction in collaborating with various small businesses to piece together solutions and assist them in achieving success and fulfillment. It is truly what I love, and I'm excited to start each new day with whatever bookkeeping challenges may come my way.
